Wayne Root: Finding Great MLB Dogs This Weekend
The weekend before the All-Star Break can be very tricky for sports bettors. Motivation is far from a sure thing from a few hundred exhausted players who can't wait for a few days off. Yet, there are obviously a few teams and individual pitchers who will be giving it everything this weekend because of the pennant races or some rivalry scenarios.
You regulars know that WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is the documented KING OF UPSETS in this industry because of my career success at finding live dogs in all sports. In baseball, the dogs have to win straight up for you to cash (unless you're betting the run line). So...we need to find pitchers and offenses that can get the job done. Heading into the All-Star Break, that means you need to have this factor on your mind...
AVOID UGLY DOGS WITH A PLANE TO CATCH!
There are several losing teams who are playing on the road this weekend outside their home time zone. As a group, this isn't exactly fertile hunting for finding great dogs! It's not like all of them are destined to get swept. But, it's largely a group that's ready for some time off. All of the following road teams (first team listed) had losing records entering their current weekend series...
Atlanta at Colorado
Philadelphia at San Francisco
Milwaukee at Los Angeles Dodgers
Oakland at Cleveland
San Diego at Texas
I will certainly be hesitant to step out on any of those teams as dogs on Sunday when they have a plane to catch for their early Monday tee times or family fun days. The full weekend is a big question mark to me for all of them.
Also of note...we have two teams who are at .500 or better entering their weekends who are also far away from home...
Arizona at the NY Mets
Houston at Tampa Bay
I'll monitor the Diamondbacks and Astros through the weekend to make determinations about Sunday motivation.
Which underdogs might have peak motivation? Well, we have a couple of great rivalries in Interleague play, one classic all-time historical rivalry, and some pennant chase matchups. I believe motivated dogs will be on the field in these matchups...
Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs (Interleague inner-city rivalry)
Washington at Baltimore (Interleague close proximity rivalry)
New York Yankees at Boston (classic historical BLOOD rivalry)
St. Louis at Pittsburgh (huge pennant race series)
Detroit at Minnesota (huge pennant race series)
Again, I don't want to suggest that dogs are going to dominate those matchups. But, if you're trying to find the BEST value underdogs...those matchups do provide fertile hunting ground for potential BIG BETS because it's so much harder to "take the day off" in such high profile showdowns. The Phillies or Brewers are much more likely to tank a game or a weekend on the West Coast than any underdogs in the above mix would given what's at stake in the standings and their local media.
Here are a few other quick keys for you to look at this weekend...
*Quality offenses (you have to score to win!)
*Starting Pitchers in good recent form (what happened in April/May doesn't matter)
*Quality bullpens (the hidden key to most handicapping success in MLB right now)
*Full Strength lineups (be sure your manager isn't giving a slugger a day off!)
I'm always on the lookout for upset specials or small favorites who have a much better win position than is suggested by the market. This weekend right before the All-Star Break creates some additional important dynamics that help me find even bigger edges.
