Wayne Root: The Jets Got Even More Interesting...So Did Buffalo!
Earlier this week I talked about the interesting potential for the New York Jets in this Preseason. Not a day later, starting quarterback Geno Smith was knocked out of action for 6-10 weeks with a broken jaw. He was sucker punched by former teammate IK Enemkpali, who was released from the team immediately thereafter.
Unfortunately for the sake of Preseason betting...that might have limited the Jets potential to get really good results. I thought the projected quarterback rotation of Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Bryce Petty had the potential to put 3-4 good quarters on the board every week. Smith and Fitzpatrick would be trying to make a case to start. Petty is a rookie from Baylor who had a great chance to move the ball vs. third team (or worse defenses).
Now...Fitzpatrick will definitely be the starter in September (unless he gets hurt too). That means more of a focus on fundamentals and avoiding contact. Petty will be facing a better class of defender right off the bat too, most likely. So...we still have a new head coach in Todd Bowles who may be inspiring a new attitude. But, the stars aren't aligned nearly as well as they were. (You'll have to sign up for service to see how this is affecting my thinking on a game-by-game basis!).
Note that a day after he was released, Enemkpali was picked up by the Buffalo Bills. That wasn't a surprising development at all because Buffalo is coached by Rex Ryan...the man who drafted Enemkpali awhile back. You know Ryan loves the chance to stick it to the Jets by acquiring the man who knocked Smith out of the lineup!
*Ryan's no longer with the Jets partly because Smith was such a bad quarterback
*Ryan loves defensive players
*Ryan loves defensive players who stand up for themselves even more
*Ryan and Enemkpali will get to face the Jets twice this season!
Well, it's possible Enemkpali gets a long suspension from the league for his behavior. Though, the league's pretty distracted at the moment! But, even if he's out for a few weeks or a month, Buffalo doesn't play the Jets until November 12 in New York. Then, the teams face off again in Buffalo in the season finale on the first Sunday of January. You can bet those are going to be wars.
I'll talk more about Ryan and the Bills down the road. I was saving that for another day until Ryan made that brash move this week! Their preseason opener is Friday vs. Carolina. Then, they'll play next Thursday in Cleveland in a game that will be nationally televised by ESPN. NYJ opens Thursday night in Detroit. Money came flying in on the Lions after news of the locker room altercation and injury broke.
Bowles and Ryan are two of seven head coaches making their debuts with new teams this weekend. Let's run a list of those before calling it a day...
Chicago...John Fox...hosts Miami Thursday
Denver...Gary Kubiak...visits Seattle Friday
Atlanta...Dan Quinn...hosts Tennessee Friday
Oakland...Jack Del Rio...hosts St. Louis Friday
San Francisco...Jim Tomsula...visits Houston Saturday
I'm not going to say much about those guys because I need to protect my picks for my paying clients. I will remind you that Ryan, Fox, Kubiak, and Del Rio all have track records showing how they prioritized the Preseason with prior teams. Bowles, Quinn, and Tomsula are unknown quantities. Brand new coaches are often feast or famine in their first season. Either they inspire the players to bring a new attitude...or they're so disorganized and uncertain that it takes awhile to get things moving in the right direction. I'll be watching games involving the Jets, Falcons, and 49ers very closely with that in mind.
WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is the only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the "Walk of Fame." That's because I win year-round in all sports. I love betting the NFL Preseason because you can find a handful of games that are virtual locks based on attitude and effort alone. Vegas oddsmakers can literally do nothing about these games! That's part of why no oddsmaker has a star on the Walk of Fame!
I have some great NFLX plays planned for you this weekend. You can purchase game day football or seasonal packages right here at the website with your credit card.
