Wayne Root: Stanford Looking to Shock #6 Southern Cal

As the undisputed KING OF UPSETS, a handicapper like WAYNE ALLYN ROOT absolutely loves teams like Stanford. They're the kind of program that can rise up and beat anybody on any given day because of their brains, talent, and composure under fire. Playing percentage football is a great way to stay close with more talented teams. But, they can also fall down and lose to anybody on any given day if they're not motivated. Playing percentage football helps inferior teams stay close to you!

We've seen the best of Stanford in recent seasons when they had Oregon's number. You saw them at their most disappointing a couple of weeks ago when they basically no-showed their season opener on the road in an early kickoff against a Northwestern team that just didn't get their juices flowing.

Well...this week's opponent...#6 USC is definitely going to get their juices flowing!

Does that mean yours truly is going to be releasing Stanford (+) to my clients. That may depend on whether or not the game day line is +9.5 or +10. Ten is a key number in football. What about making a headline-making upset call? Well, you have to be a paying customer to find out about that. I can tell you that this is on the short list of possible underdog plays because:

*USC hasn't been challenged yet! They've won by scores of 55-6 and 59-9 at home over Arkansas State and Idaho. Though that Arkansas State win became more impressive when that team hung tough with Missouri the next week. Still...Stanford is a legitimate opponent that can disrupt what USC wants to do.

*USC's stats weren't as good as those final scores. Their blowout of Arkansas State was largely fueled by a 4-0 turnover advantage. The Trojans only won yardage 509-401. Great offense...but disappointing defense. What's going to happen against a solid opponent that's less likely to turn the ball over? What happens if that great offense can't even get on the field because Stanford is effectively running clock?

*Stanford has revenge off a 13-10 home loss to USC a year ago. You may remember that hardfought battle. That was the game where USC Athletic Director Pat Haden was on the sidelines yelling at officials! Stanford remembers that...and circled this game on the calendar as soon as that one ended. Revenge can be overplayed in college football. It's almost never a bad thing when a bowl caliber underdog is looking to avenge a home loss against a ranked rival.

That all sounds great. Why isn't this an automatic lock? Stanford only returns four defensive starters. This game could really get away from them if the new starters don't step up. The last thing you want is to be rooting for Stanford's conservative offense as it's playing catch up in the fourth quarter. They're not designed for that. They couldn't even play catch up at Northwestern! This game could really blow up in either direction. Stanford is capable of winning and covering by double digits. USC is capable of putting up big offensive numbers in a way that completely takes the road underdog out of the game.

I'll be following the Pac 12 very closely for you this season here at the website. The games are practically played in my backyard. There's a lot of sharp and square interest in this conference because of that proximity. At the very least, I'll be watching this one with a keen eye because it will help me pick winners down the road in other games involving these teams.

Also very much on the Pac 12 radar this week, a pair of interconference games:
California at Texas
#10 UCLA hosting #19 BYU

California may make a move into the rankings if they can earn a statement win in Austin in a national TV game. That BYU/UCLA showdown is definitely worth staying up late for if you live on the East Coast. I may be saying that every week this season! There have been some early disappointments. I still believe the Pac 12 is the most exciting conference to handicap in college football this season.

You can get my best plays from the full college board every game day right here at the website with your credit card. If you have any questions about which of my programs best suits your individual needs, please talk to one of my representatives in the office at 1-877-ROOT-WINS. I'll be back with you before Sunday to talk about the NY Giants home opener for 2015 against the Atlanta Falcons. Both teams played nationally televised prime time nailbiters last week. I'll make sure we stay on top of all developments involving the New York teams here in my web articles. I've lived out here in Las Vegas for many decades now. But, I was born in New York as a true S.O.B. (son of a butcher!). My connections to the Big Apple continue to pay off for me week after week.

I'm the only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the "Walk of Fame" here in Las Vegas. The arrival of football season means you need a PROVEN WINNER. It's time for you to go to W.A.R. alongside WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!
