FORGET X's AND O's IN WAGERING ON BOWL GAMES
by Wayne Allyn Root
MOTIVATION IS KEY!!
College kids playing in bowl games are all about motivation. The match ups may be important and enticing but none are as important as how ready and eager the team is to be in the game and how that has affected their preparations. Teams take off a long time to prepare for these games. If a team lacks motivation then that time off can be profitable for the betting experts as a go against on that lack of team effort.. They make a point on zeroing on that all important information.
IS THE CURRENT COACHING STAFF STILL ON BOARD?
Can the motivation level of teams heading into their bowl games be determined? Absolutely there are key factors. Teams fire their coaches at the end of their regular season. Coaches that had a great run want to move up and are hired to take over better programs. Some are allowed to coach their former team while some want to get right to recruiting and leave their program to an assistant. Some coaches resign before getting fired. Many football teams go into their bowl preparations with interim coaches, chaos and uncertainty in their coaching staff. The information gathered on lame duck coaches is critical. It's all how the players feel about their coach, staff and which bowl game they drew. This is critical information.
ARE THE COORDINATORS STILL THERE?
Losing offensive and defensive coordinators are an incredibly overlooked part of the betting process and may be a more important factor than losing their head coach. You want to look at how the staff, team and traveling fans have responded to the changes. You can usually find something either positive or negative that will zero in on an edge. Some teams will react negatively and that can have a big impact on their bowl game.
OUTSIDE THE X's AND O's
There are obviously some college bowl games that are more attractive to players than others. If a team is heading into a game that isn’t where they want to be then they could struggle to be fired up for the game. Some teams feel slighted. Some may be sent to a 3rd tiered bowl game offering little in terms of the "wow" factor. Going to Hawaii to play is much more favorable than going to Shreveport La. I'm sure that landing a January 1st bowl game will create more excitement than playing December 22nd. Some players end their college career well as seniors or players that have injuries during the season and are ready to return to the field and are looking to be in top form. They may be playing to give that one last favorable playing impression to any scouts from the NFL in attendance. Some smaller schools will be totally jacked up if they are playing a "named" school or a top 25 team. On the contrary, the bigger named top team could care little or less about the game. It's a vacation and a chance to get a bunch of cool gifts. Teams that were embarrassed in their last game may want to "right the ship". The media may claim they were undeserving and want to show the world they are a great team.
BE WEARY OF PASSING TEAMS
Betting against a team that is a pass first team may allow the professional to profit. The teams routes have been filmed over and over. The timing between the quarterback and wide receivers is off. The motivation for the offensive line may not have their heart in the contest. Some top handicappers like to focus on certain conferences over other conferences. It’s important to look at things like teams history, or coaches common to both squads to see if there could be anything that could help teams get focused.
TRASH TALKING TEAMS IS A "NO-NO"
Bloodbaths can be built out of teams trash talking and if one team takes an action that incites the other team in the weeks leading up to the game. The media can have a big impact on how teams are feeling heading into a bowl game whether it be positive or negative.
