Wayne Root: Can Carolina Obliterate Denver in Super Bowl 50?
Earlier this week, I looked at the question of whether or not the Denver Broncos could SHOCK the Carolina Panthers in this Sunday's Super Bowl 50. The answer was obviously YES. Denver has a great defense and a veteran quarterback. Carolina is facing its toughest test away from home all season after enjoying a soft regular season schedule and home cooking through the playoffs. Denver can DEFINITELY score a shocker.
But, even dog-heavy handicappers like WAYNE ALLYN ROOT have to be fully aware that Carolina could win a blowout here. Today's article should be read in tandem with that piece from earlier in the week. You won't know from my articles who I'm picking because it's easy to see PINNACLE GAME OF THE YEAR possibilities for either side. Don't forget I had Alabama over Michigan State 38-0 for a huge college playoff release. I do occasionally release big favorites when it's justified.
Will it be justified Sunday for the favored Carolina Panthers? Can Carolina win another blowout?
This could also be an obvious YES because...
*Carolina's been winning blowouts all season...
*Denver's offense has struggled all season, and now is in a truly brutal scenario of having to play a high quality defense in a stadium that's been hard on offenses all season. The turf in Santa Clara has been nasty since the stadium opened. You may be aware that San Francisco 49ers games went 1-7 to the Under there this season (compared to a lot of Overs in 49ers road games).
Denver's offense could only gain 324 and 244 yards vs. Pittsburgh and New England
Denver's offense could only gain 4.6 and 3.7 yards-per-play vs. Pittsburgh and New England
Denver's offense could only convert 3 of 15 and 6 of 17 third down conversions in those games
Carolina's defense certainly isn't worse than those defenses...and is arguably much better. Denver isn't playing at home at altitude, but could be struggling with a questionable surface (though the weather looks like it will be nice). In that college football game I referenced, Alabama's cover challenge wasn't going to be difficult if Michigan State couldn't get anything on the board. Sparty couldn't! If Denver's going to score 10 or less...then we have a potential blowout.
*Denver's defense was on the field A LOT vs. Pittsburgh and New England because Manning wasn't converting third downs. There could be sustained fatigue from that. Or, it could happen again in a way that causes the fourth quarter to get away from the Broncos. Cam Newton is a terrific talent...and he can simply toy with tired defenses.
*Blowouts in important football games are often triggered by turnovers. You saw that when Carolina won the category 7-1 against Arizona in that 49-15 laugher in the NFC Championship. Who's more likely to win the turnover category in Super Bowl 50? Both defenses are good at forcing them. But, Manning has been much worse about making them this season. Cam Newton tends to run out of trouble rather than forcing bad throws or fumbling on sacks. So far, Denver has avoided the turnover bug this postseason. There's no guarantee that continues.
You longtime clients and readers now that I release a lot more underdogs than favorites. I'm THE KING OF UPSETS because I have more documented upset calls than any other man in the handicapping industry. You can't assume I'll be on the underdog here though. There are so many similarities to this game and Alabama/Michigan State. The pointspread just isn't going to matter if the underdog can't score and becomes turnover prone.
I have between now and Sunday to decide if Denver is capable of scoring enough to cover...and if Denver's defense (and potential field condition issues) might be able to slow down what's become a Carolina juggernaut. Once you get my release and hear I'm looking for at least a 7-point cover (one way or the other), what you've read in my SB50 articles this week will tell you why. Heck, I might be talking about at least a 10-point cover either way...and neither possibility should surprise you the way this game is shaping up.
I'm the only man in the sports betting industry who has a star on the "Walk of Fame" here in Las Vegas. That's because I've made my name by winning the biggest sports betting events year-after-year for decades. I don't win every single bet of course. Nobody could. But, I helped put this industry on the map because my winning reputation helped me cross over into the mainstream. Part of the reason you've heard of WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is because people want to know who WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is betting in the Super Bowl!
