Lots of talk this week about all the final regular-season games and upcoming College Basketball Conference Tournaments that will litter the landscape these next two weeks… so let’s sound off on a bunch of items in today’s Jim Sez Mid-Week Update before we get to this week’s version of the Top 16 NCAA Tournament seeds (and remember the NCAA Tourney opens Tuesday, March 15th from Dayton):
ACC – Best guess is that there will be seven squads from this 15-team league that get invitations to the “Big Dance” and remember no Louisville (22-7, 11-5) thanks to that “self-imposed suspension”.
Best Game of the Week… Saturday, North Carolina at Duke (9 p.m. ET, ESPN)
BIG EAST – All along the hoop "experts" out there believed Villanova was the class of this conference but might Seton Hall (21-7, 11-5) be the best of the bunch? The Pirates have won eight of their last nine games since late January and lefty Desi Rodriguez (27 points in Sunday’s win against Xavier) is one smooth-shooting dude.
Best Game of the Week… Wednesday, Seton Hall at Butler (8:30 p.m. ET, Fox 1 Sports)
BIG 10– Don’t know why folks keep thinking the Ohio State Buckeyes (19-11, 11-6) are on the outside-looking-in at an at-large NCAA Tournament berth? If Thad Matta’s guys win just one game in the Big 10 Tourney (or somehow win at Michigan State this weekend), than we say punch their ticket already!
Best Game of the Week… Saturday, Wisconsin at Purdue (7 p.m. ET, Big 10 Network)
BIG 12– Believe it or not, at press time there were seven teams from this conference with RPI’s of 24-or-better and so you do start to think that not only is Texas Tech (18-10, 8-8) gonna get an invite, but Tubby Smith’s Red Raiders might just be a decent seed (see a #7) in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
Best Game of the Week … Saturday, Iowa State at Kansas (1 p.m. ET, espn2)
PAC-12– There’s been major debates throughout this hoops season as to whether or not this year’s Pac-12 is elite but all we’ll say is we happen to list five teams that all could make a real run towards the Final Four … that’s Oregon, Utah, California, Arizona and Colorado.
Best Game of the Week… Thursday, California at Arizona (9 p.m. ET, ESPN)
SEC – Okay, it’s no secret that if a team or two gets hot in next week’s SEC Tournament (we’re talking to you, Ole Miss/Alabama/LSU/Florida) then a couple of them could slide into the "Big Dance" but starting to think we might get five teams “max” from this league in the NCAAs.
Best Game of the Week… Saturday, LSU at Kentucky (2 p.m. ET, CBS)

MORE COLLEGE HOOPS – OUR WEEKLY TOP 16 SEEDS
It’s our weekly segment as we look at how the Top 4 seeds in each region of the NCAA Tournament would be if we were in control of the process and so let’s get you our up-to-the-minute opinion. Note that we’re also including the Sweet 16/Elite 8 sites for each of the four regions:
EAST – at Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia (PA)
Villanova, North Carolina, West Virginia and Indiana
The #5 Seed – Notre Dame
Comment: Folks, we’re giving Villanova a break here ’cause last week’s loss at Xavier could have cost the Wildcats this top seed in the East but better believe the NCAA Tournament folks want to put "fannies in the seats" and so – for now – we’ll keep ’Nova playing on this familiar floor in Philly (played three regular-season games here this year). However, we’ve toughened up this bracket with North Carolina and West Virginia replacing our East #2 and #3 seeds from last week — Miami and Baylor.
MIDWEST – at United Center, Chicago (IL)
Kansas, Maryland, Oregon and Seton Hall
The #5 Seed – Iowa State
Comment: Forgive us for repeating ourselves, but if Kansas (23-4) runs the table till Selection Sunday than the Jayhawks will most assuredly land the NCAA Tourney’s top overall seed and should get the "easiest road" to the Final Four. As you can see, we’ve hurdled above-mentioned Seton Hall into our top 16 seed mix and better believe a Kansas vs. Seton Hall showdown in the Sweet 16 round would be a blast!
SOUTH – at KFC Yum Center, Louisville (KY)
Virginia, Oklahoma, Iowa and Duke
The #5 Seed – Purdue
Comment: Okay, so we’ve bumped once-upon-a-time #1 team in the land Oklahoma right out of a #1 regional seed thanks to those three setbacks in its last five games but it’s a slam dunk that if the Sooners win the Big 12 Tourney, than that’ll change things again. Gotta seed Virginia above Oklahoma here based on the always-popular "body-of-work" theory here but overall this top five group would be ultra-competitive if we get any of these potential matchups in the Sweet 16 or Elite 8.
WEST – at Honda Center, Anaheim (CA)
Michigan State, Xavier, Utah and Miami
The #5 Seed – Arizona
Comment: No doubt that "Sparty" will snag a #1 regional seed if it wins the Big 10 Tournament and the committee folks not to hand out 1’s to both Big 12 teams Kansas and Oklahoma but where we are truly conflicted is the other high seeds … we have Xavier at #2 in the West even though we’ve shunned the Big East all year and we’ve shifted Miami out West although the ’Canes could draw a higher seed (and stay closer to home) with a long run in the ACC Tournament. One more loss by Arizona this week and we’re shifting Kentucky into that #5 seed here.
