Wayne Root: Shocker Potential in the Final Four

Obviously THE KING OF UPSETS is thinking long and hard about upset potential in this Saturday's NCAA Final Four matchups featuring Villanova vs. Oklahoma and North Carolina vs. Syracuse. I won both of my upset calls last week, on small favorites Oklahoma (+) over Oregon and Villanova (+) over Kansas. I was on the favorites in the other games...winning with North Carolina...but going into shock with the rest of the country when Virginia blew its huge lead vs. Syracuse.

Nothing wrong with a 75% weekend!

Here are the two questions for us now...

*Can Oklahoma (+2) take out Villanova?
*Can Syracuse (+9) continue its run of shockers vs. North Carolina?

Oklahoma has already defeated Villanova once this season...and it's obviously not much of an upset of a 2-point underdog wins. But, it's far from a sure thing that WAYNE ALLYN ROOT will be on the Sooners in that one.

Villanova has revenge
Villanova has been more impressive in the Dance vs. a tougher schedule
OU is more of a one-man team, while Villanova has a diversity of threats

If I'm going to take the points there...after cashing on OU as a short dog vs. Oregon of the overrated Pac 12...it will because I think Buddy Hield can have another great game. This event has shown often during the years that one transcendent talent can take a team all the way to the finals. Anyone remember many of Danny Manning's teammates? Or Larry Bird's? If one guy is unstoppable, then that team has a way of getting points on the board in crunch time. That's all it takes! Teams must score when the game is on the line to keep advancing...having one great player puts them in position to do so.

I'm writing this in the middle of the week, and I haven't yet made a final decision. But, I can assure you that I will only pick Oklahoma if I'm convinced Villanova's going to come in flat off the Kansas win...and I'm confident Hield can remain relatively un-guardable. OU won't advance if somebody else has to do the heavy lifting.

In the nightcap, Syracuse provides an interesting handicapping challenge.

*They have a great zone defense, but it becomes easier for teams to beat it in multiple looks. This will be North Carolina's third look!

*They're better in a slow-paced game because there's time to set the zone...but North Carolina races down the floor with great athletes.

*They're playing so far over their heads lately that it's hard to believe they can keep it going. Remember how badly the Orange were playing in the final weeks of the regular season? Remember how many pundits said they didn't even belong in the tournament? Syracuse can turn back into a pumpkin at any moment...and you don't want to be riding the carriage when that happens!

But, you know what? Syracuse looked pretty darn good vs. Carolina during the regular season. They didn't cover at home when they fell apart in the final minutes. They did cover the revenge spot on the road several weeks later. As long as they keep believing in themselves, there's always a chance. They didn't throw in the towel vs. Virginia...and it looked for a few moments like they already had! You just can't count a Jim Boeheim coached team out until the final buzzer. That was true back during the glory days of the Big East...and it's just as true now in the ACC.

Bottom line...

*I won last weekend with Oklahoma over Oregon, so I could pull the trigger again on the Sooners. But...

*I won last weekend with Villanova over Kansas, and this is a pretty cheap price to get a team as great as Villanova!

*I won last weekend with North Carolina over Notre Dame, so it's not scary to lay a price vs. another mid-level ACC team that was on the Dance bubble just a matter of days ago. But...

*I lost fading Syracuse...and I didn't become THE KING OF LAS VEGAS by constantly making the same mistake twice!

As I said, I have some time to make my final decisions. You regulars know that I've stepped out with PINNACLE plays on enough favorites and dogs that I haven't tipped my hand today.
