Wayne Root: Unimpressive NY Giants Face Atlanta in Home Opener

I promised you I'd try to stay on top of the New York NFL storylines once again this season here in my web articles. Last weekend I talked about the Jets' home opener with Cleveland (a win, but kind of a gift win considering the opponent!). Today I'll talk about the Giants home opener this coming Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

First, I have to say that I wasn't impressed with the Giants last Sunday night in Dallas, even though they covered the spread and should have won the game. It would have been a vulture win off turnovers rather than a truly solid victory. Dallas won yards-per-play 6.4 to 4.7. Dallas won total yardage 436 to 289. When it was time to win the game...Dallas found a way to get the job done while the G-men found a way to blow it.

Let's check the quarterback position...
Eli Manning: 20-36-0-190
Tony Romo: 36-45-2-356

Eli had 16 incomplete passes even though he threw nine fewer balls than Romo. Passing yardage was a blowout. If Romo didn't have those two interceptions, this wouldn't have even been a game. And, don't forget that the Giants had a fumble return touchdown too. They can't count on that happening very often this season.

Did the Giants look like a Wildcard threat to you? I didn't see it. I saw what looked like last year's 6-10 team continuing to struggle while good fortune kept them close on the scoreboard. Eli Manning still isn't comfortable in this offense. And, now he's facing even more pressure after signing that $84 million extension.

The Jason Pierre-Paul story isn't helping matters much either. That's the kind of thing that demoralizes a team because the players don't really trust management...and management doesn't trust the players. Veteran head coach Tom Coughlin may have lost the team for the most part last season anyway. What's going to be the catalyst to get things moving in the right direction? Can this team finally start clicking and impress WAYNE ALLYN ROOT?!

At least playing at home is a much more manageable task than having to open the season on the road against your division champion. Neither the Giants nor Falcons were very good last season. Atlanta had to go down to the wire Monday night to survive a home game against the Philadelphia Eagles. That extra day of rest should help the G-men. The betting markets have made NYG a slight favorite. They've been either -2.5 or -3 through the week. Since Atlanta money comes in at the key number of three...the sharpest bettors are telling you they think the Falcons are the slightly better team. Home field advantage by itself is usually worth three in the NFL.

I can't tell you here in a web article whether or not I'm going to be releasing a play in that Falcons/Giants game. I still want to see the weekend line moves before deciding about pulling the trigger. I can tell you that there are certain types of teams that should really dominate the Giants this year. I don't think the market has recognized that yet based on early season and Futures pricing. I'm expecting to be betting against the Giants more than I'm on them in the first half of the season.

Who's the better team between the Giants and the Jets? That's become an interesting question. Last week the Jets were -3 on this field against the lowly Browns. That means the market saw them as even with Cleveland. But, this week they're only +7 on the road against AFC power Indianapolis. That represents a jump in Power Ratings because there's no way Cleveland would only be +7 at Indy. Would the Giants be +7 at Indy given how shaky they just looked?

This true S.O.B. (son of a butcher) from New York will try to get things pinned down for you in the coming weeks. Right now, it's obvious that Buffalo is more highly regarded than either the Jets or the Giants for "best in New York." If you're pick-em at home against the AFC favorite New England're a Wildcard caliber team.

There are surely no questions about who's BEST IN LAS VEGAS! The only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the local "Walk of Fame" answered that question long ago.
