Wayne Root: Will We Have More Shockers in College Football Final Four?

Last year, the Ohio State Buckeyes stormed through the college football Final Four with a pair of impressive underdog victories over Alabama and Oregon. They were so great in those games that's it's easy to forget a year later that they weren't supposed to win either of them! In fact, there was some outrage that OSU was moved into the brackets in the first place.

A year later...and you know that WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is scouting out Cinderella possibilities with returning Alabama and three newcomers. The invitations were made early Sunday...and Las Vegas responded quickly with opening lines...

*Alabama opened at -9 over Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl
*Oklahoma opened at -2.5 over Clemson in the Orange Bowl

That's right...the #1 team in the an underdog to #4 Oklahoma. Wouldn't that be something if Clemson turned out to be a betting market Cinderella as the #1 seed!

I had a great day on Championship Saturday. My PINNACLE play on Iowa +3.5 cashed in...and came inches from winning outright. I also cashed with underdogs Florida and Air Force. I surprised some with a BONUS play on Stanford (-) over USC. I told you last week that USC shouldn't have hired Clay Helton so soon! It took away all the emotion from the Trojans...who were pushed around all night by the physical Cardinal. So flush in college cash, I'm already thinking about how I'm going to play the Final Four on New Year's Eve!

You regulars will probably assume that I'll be on the underdogs. That's not a bad assumption. But, I showed you again Saturday that I'll take the right favorite at the right price. Stanford was obviously the right side over USC. Maybe OU or Alabama will grade out the same way in my process. I have several days to make my final decisions in those two games. And, I won't post them for free in a web article! That's not fair to my paying customers.

I will tell you at first blush though that I do think the stage is set for some upsets once again.

*Alabama has become very conservative and run-heavy in recent games. Are Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin not getting along again? Kiffin wants to play a wide-open style. Alabama keeps handing off to a star running back to let him carry the load. Do that vs. Michigan State...and you're going to spend the day punting. The Tide lost to the quality defense of Ole Miss...and has been known to struggle getting scoreboard distance against opponents who aren't handing away cheap points. Michigan State may not ultimately win or cover....but Sparty does match up as well as could be hoped against a power program like 'Bama.

*Oklahoma was the favorite on the opener in the other game. Bob Stoops?! Can you trust him as a favorite in big games? The Sooners lost in the regular season to Texas because they went in overconfident. They almost blew a big second half lead to TCU a couple of weeks ago. I love the talent on this team...and they are overdue to make a statement again at the national level. But...any underdog facing OU has a chance to exploit the things Stoops does wrong under pressure. And, you know Dabo Sweeney will have his players fired up and ready after this snub from oddsmakers. That opening line plays right into his "us against the world" mentality.

In the finals...let's say Alabama wins and gets there. The Tide will be favored over either Oklahoma or Clemson. They will then have to deal with a potent offense full of fast athletes. And, their offense may still be dealing with issues of dimensionality if Saban refuses to open things up.

We'll see how the lines move between now and then. Maybe the public and private sectors will line up on Clemson in such a way that they become a favorite and OU turns to the dog. For now, I can tell you that the stage is at least set for another Cinderella winner. Alabama will have to play its best football to win out as favorites.
