You all know that WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is THE KING OF UPSETS. And, if you read my article last week, you know that I don't think there's any way that the Golden State Warriors are going to get upset in their second round series with the Utah Jazz. The big dog might make sense in a few individual game spots. But, a series upset? Not going to happen!
What about in the other three series? Frankly, I wouldn't be shocked if the underdog won any of those. Even with Washington dropping Game One in Boston, we saw how shaky the Celtics were against Chicago before the Rajon Rondo injury. Let me go through them one by one.
CAN TORONTO SHOCK CLEVELAND?
Yes! Toronto was the better team statistically during the regular season, even if Cleveland had the slightly better record. Most importantly to me, they'll be able to score points! You regular readers know I'm always emphasizing this angle. So many others talk about "defensive dogs," (which also happens to work in the case of Toronto). But, it's very hard to score an outright upset unless you can outscore your opponent.
*Toronto has a variety of offensive weapons
*Cleveland has an inconsistent defense that's often horrible
This is an ideal situation for an upset. We're not looking at a dog that's hoping to play close. We're looking at a dog that can actually PUNISH the favorite if the favorite doesn't bring enough defensive intensity. Doesn't mean it's going to happen. My point here is that Toronto is the perfect prototype for a truly dangerous underdog.
CAN HOUSTON SHOCK SAN ANTONIO?
Oh, absolutely. Hey, I have a lot of respect for Gregg Popovich and the Spurs. But, this Houston offense is something special. They have a lot of three-point shooters, and a point guard in James Harden who can get those guys open looks when he's not scoring himself. This plays right into my hands as an underdog that can get hot and score a ton.
I have to admit though, San Antonio has a very strong defense...much better than Cleveland's. So, Houston will HAVE to shoot well against a top-notch defense to spring the upset. Tougher task. But, possible.
CAN WASHINGTON SHOCK BOSTON?
Once again, we have some prolific offensive weapons on the underdog. You don't often see this in pro sports once we get this deep into the playoffs. Utah is the only defensive-minded underdog, and they're a helicopter trying to take down King Kong. Washington's guards are going to put on a show. We know this. My concern here would be that their own defense is so bad that they're not likely to win four of the next six games. They didn't really impress against Atlanta until Game Six. And, that's when the Hawks had already started ordering their plane tickets for Cancun.
Based on the pointspreads, the betting markets are saying that Washington has the best shot to win a road game of any of the dogs. Maybe it's better to think of that as "the best chance to take advantage of a mediocre opponent." To me, Toronto and Houston have a better chance to take control of things and go out and WIN a road game, as opposed to just getting hot against a flat team (though both can do that too!).
Winning four out of seven? I think we'll see one dog do that, or at least get extremely close.
To this point we've talked about the full series. What's the best way to pick an upset on a game-by-game basis. Clearly the "bounce-back" or "zig-zag" scenario is going to come into play. That will combine the offensive explosiveness that's already in our back pocket with "back to the wall" motivation and the potential for a flat favorite.
And, of course, that opens the door for taking Cleveland, San Antonio, or Boston as underdogs when they're on the road! At the series level, only Toronto, Houston, and Washington are underdogs capable of earning a big payoff. Within the game-to-game dynamics, we'll likely have spots where we can ask LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, or Isaiah Thomas to cash an underdog ticket for us.
I'm licking my chops and you should be too!
I may or may not be releasing underdogs to my clients Monday. Perhaps I'll wait until either has lost a game. Maybe I have something on a total right out of the gate rather than a team side.
