Wayne Root: Can Celtics Shock the Cavaliers in Eastern Finals?

You longtime readers know that WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is always looking to make a dramatic upset call. I have a real eye for sensing when a shocker is about to happen. And, of course, it makes my clients and I a fortune when I'm right. Furthermore...even though we can't win 'em all...being right with underdogs "most" of the time is the way professional wagerers make their living. It's the best of all worlds. Focusing on underdogs helps you grind out a profit while also setting you up for occasional lottery payoffs.

But, the 2017 NBA Playoffs really haven't been a great place for underdogs. The only dog to win a series so far was Utah over the LA Clippers. And, that might not have happened if Blake Griffin hadn't been hurt. Some underdogs have won games outright. Not enough to make any headlines beyond the spot where the Spurs almost covered by 50 down in Houston when James Harden barely showed up.

The question before us now is whether or not the Boston Celtics can upset the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Finals. This is a very odd situation where a #1 seed will likely be an underdog every time they take the floor vs. a #2 seed...and is already a prohibitive series underdog.

Should my clients and I be investing in the dis-respected #1 seed? Here's what I think.

*While I normally love underdogs who are getting dis-respected, who enter a series with "nothing to lose" because nobody expects them to win...it's very tough to love Boston here in terms of a talent matchup. I can give them the "intangibles" category in terms of motivation, but not much else!

*Boston's defense is very soft by classic playoff standards, which gives them little hope of derailing the LeBron James freight train. You saw how easily Washington's guards attacked the basket against Boston. You even saw how shaky they were against the Chicago Bulls before Rajon Rondo got hurt. LeBron James is basically a HUGE point guard who can also make three's when he has fresh legs. Big trouble here for Boston.

*Boston's rebounding may be the worst ever of any high playoff seed. They're just AWFUL on the boards. They were crushed by Washington in the category, and have little shot of winning this battle if the series gets close. Cleveland has to get very complacent to lose rebounding to Boston. LeBron James usually doesn't get complacent when championships are on the line.

*Boston's scoring is overly reliant on three-pointers. They're not quite like Houston or Golden State in terms of emphasis...but it's still their main theme. That means they have to get HOT four times over the next seven games to spring the upset. Maybe once or twice I could see. Maybe even three times. Four times? With pressure increasing later if they find early success? As much as I love investing in "underdogs who can score," this is the most fickle offensive category.

To me, it makes a lot more sense to try to pick spots here and there that favor Boston to spring a one-game upset. If they're coming off a bad shooting game, ask them to bounce back. If Cleveland wins a blowout or two, back Boston in Cleveland's obvious letdown spot. If Cleveland suffers a major injury that changes the dynamics, but still leaves Boston as an underdog...step in then.

Right now...Cleveland is playing at a very high level because they've surrounded LeBron with dangerous long range scoring threats. Their staying fresh, which allows them to play their best defensively and on the boards. Boston should be exhausted from a physical, up-tempo seven-game series with Washington. The stars just aren't aligned for a series upset at the moment.
