Last year it seemed impossible...but then LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to beat the Golden State Warriors for the 2016 NBA crown.
This year, it seems just as impossible! Golden State is currently a -250 favorite to win the series. But, the Warriors are a perfect 12-0 so far in the playoffs, and are talking about making a 16-0 run at history. How can Cleveland score their second straight Final Round upset if they're going to be lucky to make it past five games?
As you know, WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is THE KING OF UPSETS. I've made my name in this industry for decades by calling for upsets and getting them in major sports events all over the calendar. Super Bowl, March Madness, BCS Chaos during college football regular season...and, yes, even the NBA Playoffs. Let me tell you WHY it's going to happen IF it's going to happen.
*Cleveland did it last year, and is even BETTER this year!
*Cleveland has more three-point shooters than last year
*LeBron James is the freshest he's ever been in a Finals series
*Golden State will start feeling pressure when they get close (again)
*Kevin Durant may not be a great "chemistry" fit in a high-pressure series
I'll admit...that's cherry-picking, and possibly some wishful thinking in terms of trying to make a case for an underdog. Maybe Kevin Durant's ready to win a championship. Maybe Golden State won't feel pressure this year because they're so much healthier and better prepared. The Warriors played last year like it didn't even occur to them that they could lose to Cleveland. Now they know better, and have revenge on their minds.
But, Cleveland is probably the best NBA team ever to be an underdog in a series! Most Power Ratings bear that out. Golden State is historically elite in terms of pricing. Cleveland was just -16 at home, and -10 on the road against a #1 seed in the conference finals.
I can't tell you here in a free article who I'll be picking in Game One or the series. I've outlined the case for Cleveland scoring the shocker. Let me tell you why it may be a longshot this time around.
*Golden State was dealing with some injuries last year, they're much healthier now
*The addition of Durant makes it almost impossible to guard this team!
*Golden State is also much fresher this year than last year, off that 12-0 run
*Golden State has the much better defense
*Golden State is mad and focused, which means they won't get complacent
There's a lot to like about Cleveland. You regulars know how much weight I put on OFFENSE when considering an upset call. Underdogs have to OUTSCORE their opponents to win the game. Nobody's going to confuse Cleveland with a "defensive dog" anyway. Yes, LeBron James will probably have a couple of awe-inspiring blocked shots when racing from behind on a fast break. But, the defense as a whole is going to be in trouble. Can Cleveland win four high scoring games? There's more to like about Golden State in terms of basis team evaluation. The Warriors should be the favorite. Bettors have to decide if the favorite has been priced correctly.
I can tell you that I HAVE made up my mind about this series already. I have mapped out my game-by-game attack. Having a week off between rounds allows for that level of analysis! But, winning handicappers must be open to the possibility of misreads. I'll be studying the following areas very closely in Thursday night's series opener just in case I need to make adjustments on the fly.
*Is Golden State moving the ball unselfishly?
*Is Klay Thompson finally getting his confidence back?
*Is LeBron James maintaining his composure?
*Is Cleveland's bench ready to step up after last round's disappointment?
*Are the refs going to protect LeBron to maximize entertainment value for ESPN?
And, as discussed last time, I'll also be thinking about Over/Unders. My clients know I generally focus on team sides rather than totals. But, in a Finals series, some opportunities occasionally arise that offer value. Such a door could be opening in Game One, as the Over/Under keeps rising to a place where an "Under" might make sense. Depending on the ebb and flow of the series, some bonus plays just might arise here and there.
