A couple of weeks ago, I told you to keep an eye on the Los Angeles Dodgers. They had the pieces in place to make a statement in the National League pennant race. Since then, they've made a few statements!

*The Dodgers swept the defending World Champion Chicago Cubs in a series that never even felt competitive. LA won by final scores of 4-0, 5-0, and 9-4! The Cubs are reeling of late, and the Dodgers are already in championship form.

*The Dodgers impressed in two series vs. the St. Louis Cardinals, a team that's at least Wildcard caliber right now...and might win the NL Central if the Cubs can't ever get their act together.

*The Dodgers' offense has been pounding people. With this pitching staff, the Dodgers will win a lot of games just getting to 4 runs at home, 4.5 or so on the road. But, the boys in blue are regularly getting to 5, 6, and 7 runs. Overkill.

That surge brought them to the top of the NL West standings, where they've always belonged. Some bad luck in close games (just 4-7 in those decided by one run) had them sitting below Colorado and Arizona for way too long. The market doesn't put much weight on short term bad luck. It's been pricing the Dodgers like a 103-win team all season. Now the Dodgers are playing that way. Well, they're playing BETTER than that in recent days.

Notice I haven't even said the name "Clayton Kershaw" yet. Yes, it's great to have a perennial Cy Young candidate going every fifth day. But the Dodgers are still a playoff team even without him. They're the best championship threat in baseball right now because they're loaded AND they have Superman pitching for them at least once a week.

Obviously, THE KING OF UNDERDOGS won't have many opportunities to get plus prices on the Dodgers. I can assure you I won't be fading them any time soon...unless they have to throw a spot starter because of injuries...or there's an obvious flat spot on a travel day or something. This is a team you want to back at value prices.

*They're averaging over FIVE runs per game this season despite playing home games in a park that can reduce scoring.

*Their offense isn't overly reliant on one guy (the way the Angels were before Mike Trout got hurt). That puts the Dodgers in position to avoid slumps...and to deal with injuries that may crop up.

*Their pitching staff leads the Majors in ERA.

*Their pitching staff leads the Majors with the lowest WHIP (walks and hits allowed per inning).

*Their pitching staff is second in the Majors in strikeouts...which means they control their own destiny on the mound.

*They have THREE relief pitchers who have made at least 20 appearances but have ERA's below 1.40.

Right now...it's the total package. Yes, some of the young contributors may fall back to earth. And, you always have to worry about pitching injuries on a team that gets a lot of strikeouts. But, if the playoffs were held today, I believe the Dodgers would be clear favorites in the NL over even the Washington Nationals (those teams wills square off next week in Chavez Ravine). It would be interesting to see how a Dodgers/Astros World Series would be priced.

The playoffs are still months off. The Dodgers better not get complacent! If they do, then we can start stepping in with opposing underdogs.

You know...that list I just gave you about Dodgers superlatives is actually a great checklist for finding underdogs. Obviously there aren't going to be teams who lead the league in those categories that will be offering great comebacks. But, you'll find value if you're looking for:

*Starting pitchers with good (or better) ERA, WHIPS, and K-Rates
*Bullpens who can protect leads
*Offenses that are balanced, which gives you a shot to create runs every night
*Offenses with a proven ability to get runs on the board, because underdogs have to OUTSCORE their opponents.

If you're like most bettors...you're losing with favorites who don't have those things. The public loves betting favorites! Stop crossing your fingers and hoping for the best at bad prices. Start betting smart at good prices. I'm the only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the "Walk of Fame" here in Las Vegas because I know how to play the market and put the odds in my favor.

I'm confident that sports bettors will be dealing with the Los Angeles Dodgers all through the 2017 regular season and postseason.
