The Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels begin their annual four-game Interleague series Monday at Chavez Ravine. The first two games will be played there in Dodgers country. The final two Wednesday and Thursday will be played in Anaheim.
Everyone's been talking about the Dodgers lately. Justifiably! For the past few weeks they've ruled the baseball world. They're just crushing everybody night after night, with both great offense and great defense. The media used to talk about how the Dodgers were winning every time Kershaw took the mound. Now, it's basically every time ANYBODY takes the mound. The team is that hot, winning 16 of the last 17 after crushing Colorado this past weekend.
The Angels have been a success story on their own, but on a much smaller scale. Many bettors and most of the mainstream media stopped paying attention to them after Mike Trout was hurt. They were well off of Houston's pace at the time, and it was assumed a disaster was imminent.
But, if anything, the team has played better since the injury! The won-lost record is slightly better, but that has come against a tough schedule that included a series win in Houston against the potent Astros, and two series wins over the New York Yankees, and then a road series win in Fenway against the Red Sox this past weekend. Yes, the Yankees have been in a slide of late...but much of that came against these Angels.
I'm not going to tell you that LAA is ready to make a run at the Astros. That race is all but mathematically over. That doesn't mean you can't make money with the Angels. If they're going to play near Wildcard caliber the rest of the way, while the betting markets are treating them as an afterthought, then they're going to offer value. And, if Trout lights a fire when he's able to return...then we may have one of the big success stories of the second half of the season.
We could see...
*A team with a chip on its shoulder
*Playing with a sense of urgency
*With an offense good enough to consistently outscore opponents
We saw the opposite of that out of the gate. The Angels were going through the motions, and Trout was about the only guy hitting before his injury. I'll be watching this Angels/Dodgers series very closely to see if there's enough of a spark in the Angels to invest in moving forward. I may even take a shot or two on the Angels if the price is right.
In the favor of LAA this week...
*They miss Clayton Kershaw in the rotation, unless there's a late change
*The Dodgers are overdue to get complacent
*The AL is the superior of the two leagues, which often gets overlooked by oddsmakers
I am aware, though, that the Angels are flying East to West without a day off, while the Dodgers have been resting comfortably at home for quite some time. I'll make sure everything is locked in for a smart bet before releasing anything to my clients.
My clients and I have had a great June. As I write this, we're over 60% with a slate that's been almost entirely underdogs and pick-em's (with a few NBA picks in there as well). I'm really in synch with several teams, and I'm very confident that July is going to be just as good or better. Oddsmakers and too many professional bettors have been behind the curve. They've overrated too many teams...they've underrated too many teams...they're giving credit where it isn't due while not accepting that they were wrong about a few projected doormats.
How have you been doing on YOUR baseball picks? Are you still asking the wrong teams to win just because they're "due" to play better. Are you still fading the teams you thought would be horrible who turned out not to be horrible? Are you betting based on what you imagined this season would look like, rather than on what's actually happening?

This Angels/Dodgers series is just one of a few great matchups this week. Cubs/Nationals also starts Monday. Minnesota/Boston could get interesting because the Twins keep playing great on the road as they refuse to go away. Later in the week, there's a Colorado/Arizona rematch and a Yankees/Astros fireworks show that will get a lot of media attention.
Another big week in another big summer for THE KING OF LAS VEGAS. It's time for you to go to W.A.R. alongside WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!
