You longtime readers know I pay very close attention to all the New York based sports teams. Even though I moved to Las Vegas many years ago, I'm still a New Yorker at heart. I was born a true "S.O.B." (son of a butcher!) in Mt. Vernon, NY.
This weekend, I'll be closely watching the team that's playing the New York Yankees. That's the Seattle Mariners, who climbed back into the Wildcard race after the All-Star Break by sweeping a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox, then taking two of three from the powerful Houston Astros. (And, all six of those games were on the road!)
While everyone's paying attention to the AL East in terms of Wildcard potential (the Rays, Yanks, and even O's and Blue Jays), or the return of Mike Trout out West for the Los Angeles Angels, it's possible that an unheralded team like Seattle could sneak through the traffic jam and steal a Wildcard.
What I like right now about Seattle in terms of MONEY-MAKING potential:
*They came out of the break breathing fire
*They weren't intimidated by playing the Astros
*They have a good offense
*They have a bunch of starting pitchers nobody wants to bet on!
That last one is huge...because it keeps their prices in check. The public doesn't load up on unfamiliar pitchers. Sharps don't unless they had huge strikeout rates in the minors. If Seattle stays hot, then names like Moore, Miranda, and Gaviglio will offer value. THE KING OF UNDERDOGS will get great value with those guys on the road. I also release small favorites to my clients...and those pitchers will qualify at home.
Offense is also very important to my handicapping. We talk about that all the time. To win with underdogs, you must back teams who can outscore their opponents. It's not enough to have a "defensive dog" who covers football or basketball point spreads by hanging close when you're talking about OUTRIGHT winners. In baseball, they HAVE to be outright winners! Seattle's averaging almost 4.8 runs per game this season. That's right in the sweet spot for "getting the job done" while also "staying off the radar."
Now, I'm aware this team has weaknesses. That's why they disappointed through the first half of the season and are just now flirting with the .500 mark. In the American League in 2017, that puts you in the heart of the Wildcard race. There's still time to surge home and reach 85 or 90 victories. Too many bettors have forgotten that's what the Mariners were supposed to do in 2017 anyway.
So, you can see why I want to watch this series with the Yankees so closely. Seattle already lost the opener of the four-game set Thursday 4-1. Not a great start, but sometimes Severino dominates opponents. Can Seattle score off of Sabathia, Tanaka, and Cessa? If they can't, in such an important series, then I probably won't take them seriously as an investment. If they get back over the .500 mark with an impressive weekend...then it's time to have them as a serious part of THE ROOT TRUST moving forward.
Handicapping baseball involves understanding what just happened...understanding what's happening right now...and anticipating what's ABOUT to happen. The latter is where you make money, because that's how you stay ahead of the market. I'm the only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the "Walk of Fame" here in Las Vegas because I'm always a few steps ahead of the oddsmakers. If one ever gets his own star, it will naturally be a few steps behind mine!
