Last week we talked about the New York Giants in this spot. As a native New Yorker (born as a true S.O.B. in Mt. Vernon, NY...a son of a butcher!), it's my responsibility to give equal time this week to the New York Jets.
There's been so much pessimism about the Jets here in Las Vegas that their "Regular Season Win Total" proposition has fallen all the way down from 4.5 to 3.5...with the Under now a slight favorite at 3.5! That means 3-13 is the best expectation for the 2017 season based on a composite of market influencers.
What does WAYNE ALLYN ROOT think about that? Well, you know I like to zig when everybody else is zagging. I'm certainly thinking about the Over as a contrarian play. But, I would like to see how Josh McCown performs in this week's dress rehearsal game against the Giants on Saturday. Christian Hackenberg is far from being a real NFL quarterback at the young age of 22. He was drafted young, and still needs more time to develop. Bryce Petty was a system quarterback at Baylor, and isn't playing in that system any more. He's also old for a "young" quarterback, which means he's not likely to be around in the league very long.
I'll say it this way:
*The Jets with McCown definitely have a chance to go 4-12 or better
*The Jets with either Hackenberg or Petty will struggle to get any wins
It's not that I'm a big believer in McCown. It's just that he's functional...and the Jets are playing a schedule that will present them with some winnable games.
*Buffalo isn't supposed to be very good this season, and the Jets play them twice.
*Miami may not like what Jay Cutler brings to the table, and the Jets play them twice.
*The Jets also play other "last place" AFC teams like Cleveland, Jacksonville, and the Chargers.
That's seven games where the team probably won't be significantly outmatched. I'm not saying they should be favorites in those games. But, if they split out those relative coin flips and then steal a game somewhere else against a flat quality opponent primed for an upset...well, who knows?
The key is McCown getting the snaps...the team NOT tanking for a draft pick until later in the season...and the normal rules of parity in the NFL helping spring an upset or two.
Long term? Well, this collection of talent is nowhere near good enough to succeed in the NFL. They need to build for the future...which means finding out who can play and who has to go. That also means shielding Hackenburg from abuse until he has a deeper understanding of how to read defenses (or just letting him go so it's somebody else's problem). And, maybe it means accepting that Todd Bowles is a solid defensive coordinator, but not somebody who can build a complete team from scratch at this level.
Neither the Jets nor Giants have impressed so far in August. I'm not worried about the G-men as long as their key skill-position players stay healthy. They're just killing time this month until trying to upset the Dallas Cowboys in their Sunday night season opener. The poor play of the Jets is a reflection of how bad their starters and backups are. Though, don't forget that McCown didn't even play in the ugly 16-6 loss at Detroit.
I may or may not have a selection in the Jets/Giants game this weekend. I still have a few days to finalize my plans. I can tell you that the ROOT TRUST will find the best investment opportunities on the board this weekend. That will involve:
*Clear first half edges when it's starter vs. starter
*Bonus fourth quarter boosts with backups who will be going all out
*Head coaches with a proven track record one way or the other

The New York Jets aren't likely to be an important team in the 2017 season. But all the media criticism about their poor play might open the door for smart contrarian bets. They're not going to SHOCK THE NATION. Will they SHOCK YOUR BOOKMAKER? Go to W.A.R. alongside WAYNE ALLYN ROOT to find out!
