There was a lot of optimism about the Philadelphia Eagles entering the 2017 pro football season. Even though the futures prices in Las Vegas, and the Regular Season Win Totals were pointing to either Dallas or the NY Giants to win the NFC East...the Eagles were a popular darkhorse pick.

Now, six weeks into the new campaign, Philadelphia is no longer a darkhorse. Many respected analysts consider them to be the best team in the NFC!

*Atlanta's defense isn't good enough
*Seattle's offense isn't good enough
*Green Bay just watched their season implode with the injury to Aaron Rodgers
*Dallas is regressing from last year's fluke
*The NY Giants are too banged up and poorly coached
*Carolina just lost at home to these very same Eagles

Who's better than Philadelphia right now? Granting that parity is a bigger factor than ever in this year's NFC, there's no evidence that ANYONE is BETTER than the Eagles. Maybe the conference will have to pull its winner out of a hat come January because Philadelphia is just one of many "decent" threats. This Monday night, the Eagles have a chance to show that they're more than that at home against the revenge-minded Washington Redskins.

Washington is playing well this season, and is now a playoff threat after a hot run. Beating the LA Rams on the road looks better now than it did at the time. Routing the Oakland Raiders does as well. If Philadelphia can SWEEP a revenge-minded divisional foe that's been in good form, then that's certainly a vote in the YES column for the Eagles being best in the NFC.

If they win impressively, there's not really much debate. You don't get a prize for being "best in the conference in October." But, that's still a big deal because this is a young team that keeps getting better. Carson Wentz lost a lot of close games as a rookie. He's now finding ways to win competitive games instead of enduring a sophomore slump.

*The Eagles survived a nailbiter with the Giants by driving for the winning field goal
*The Eagles won at the LA Chargers 26-24 with smart percentage play from Wentz
*The Eagles won at Carolina 28-23 with a big 5.2 to 3.9 edge in yards-per-play as a dog

Top teams win blowouts, as Philly did over Arizona 34-7 two weeks ago, and 30-16 on the road over Washington in the season opener. And, top teams execute the fundamentals when needed late in close games.

All that said, top teams also avoid the temptation to rest on their laurels when things are going well. What we're about to see Monday night is a NEW test for Wentz. How can he perform when FAVORED over a QUALITY opponent that's had time to make adjustments off an earlier loss? This isn't the bickering NY Giants (who the Eagles failed to cover against), or the shorthanded Arizona Cardinals travelling for a bad body clock game. Can the Eagles win by a TD or more as a sudden NFC frontrunner?

JIM HURLEY and his full team of experts have the weekend to come to a final decision. The statheads have a challenge because there's not much of a sample size for Wentz in this kind of situation. The computer simulation experts have the added headache of dealing with Kirk Cousins! He can blow up at the drop of a hat. Wentz may be the key player, or may not even matter! Our friends behind the line in Nevada and offshore have already alerted us that the Wise Guys like Washington at +5 or better. What will the line be on Monday?

JIM HURLEY invites you to join him for another huge weekend that's already begun with a winner on the Raiders (+3) over the Chiefs...and will continue through Saturday's college blockbusters and Sunday's pro monsters.
