I'm very interested in watching this Sunday's Houston Texans/Seattle Seahawks game in the NFL because the winner will be well-positioned for a run from off-the-radar into the postseason. You regulars know that WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is always thinking ahead to find potential shockers. This winner could use the victory as a launching point to go deep.
Some of you might be surprised that I'm thinking of Seattle in this light. Aren't they a perennial Super Bowl threat? The market isn't thinking of them that way any more. Philadelphia is now getting all the media attention in the NFC. New Orleans has strung together some victories, and is now getting media dark horse calls. Dallas found its running game in San Francisco last week, and is now charging back up the Power Ratings charts.
The NFC West isn't get that kind of attention. Arizona has fallen apart. The Rams are still too early in their rise to talk Super Bowl. To the degree Seattle's getting discussed, it's about whether or not they're going to be able to beat out the Rams! Right now, nobody's using "Seattle" and "Super Bowl" in the same sentence.
Seattle still has the talent to win in January (and early February). A couple of tweaks on offense, and the franchise is right back where they were in their Super Bowl years. If I see those tweaks working vs. Houston…I'll be looking to back the Seahawks until the line catches up.
Houston was becoming a great story until they suffered those horrible defensive injuries in a TV game. People are still enthusiastic about Deshaun Watson at quarterback. But, how can you pick a team to go deep in the playoffs with so many defensive injuries?
Let me tell you. A lot of what Houston does right is with schematics, and overall strategies. I'm not saying the loss of J.J. Watt doesn't hurt them. But, they were always a great defense with a horrible offense. If they can now be a "pretty good defense" with a "pretty good" offense, that puts them in the playoff discussion. Remember that young quarterbacks who can run are always most dangerous when they first hit the league before defenses learn their tendencies (like Vince Young and Colin Kaepernick).
*Houston could still win the AFC South because Blake Bortles of Jacksonville isn't trustworthy and Tennessee can figure out how to play with consistency.
*Houston could still win playoff games because nobody in the AFC is GREAT right now. And, there will be the ability to catch overconfident opponents by surprise who don't give Watson enough respect.
*Houston has already established it can play well on the road, almost beating New England outright in Foxboro. That means Houston could still cash some tickets as a Wildcard entry.
This Sunday's game in Seattle will provide a great test for Watson and the Texans. It's basically a playoff game in October for all intents and purposes. Houston is playing on the road against a quality opponent in a game they have to win to keep pace in the crowded AFC South. If Watson wins THIS game, he can win any game down the road.
If Seattle slams the door on Houston, then they will certainly have what it takes to get the job done vs. NFC playoff teams. That's why the WINNER of Houston/Seattle is going to be so important to me. Somebody's going to pass a big test in a meaningful way. It's our job to recognize that and make money with the knowledge while we can.
Thanks to all of you who joined me for Baltimore (-3) over Miami Thursday night. An easy 40-0 winner! I saw how tired Miami looked at the end of their win over the NY Jets the prior week. I knew they wouldn't have anything left in the tank. The offense barely showed up. The defense got tired and kept losing its discipline.
