You can't have a Cinderella story if there's no Cinderella! Though there's understandable debate about whether or not Ohio State should have received the fourth bid rather than Alabama, this was destined to be a championship bracket only featuring true powers once Miami lost to Pittsburgh, and once Wisconsin fell behind Ohio State.
The Final Four of Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Alabama is LOADED. That would have been true if OSU were in there instead. In terms of how Las Vegas sees teams, even having somebody like Penn State or USC in the mix wouldn't have hurt too much. Miami was a pretender. Wisconsin probably would be at least a two-loss team if they had played a schedule more typical of the other powers.
WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is known as THE KING OF UPSETS. But, you can't have any major upsets if the pointspreads are all within a couple points of pick-em. I do think there's potential for a "surprise" in the Final Four in terms of how easily the eventual champion might win. The SHOCKER is likely to be at least a two-touchdown victory in the semifinals, and maybe at least 10 points in the championship game at another line between pick-em and a field goal.
Who am I talking about? It could be any of the four.
*Alabama has been Power Rated all season as the best team in the nation according to the betting markets. And, NOW, head coach Nick Saban has a month to prepare for a revenge spot against Clemson. You know the Crimson Tide has been dreaming of redemption all season after losing as favorites to Clemson in last year's championship game. If Alabama can get a lead, they'll be facing a quarterback who doesn't play well from behind.
*Clemson's defense is very highly regarded here in Las Vegas. And, you just saw Saturday night that it's possible to win a blowout with your defense. Clemson's offense spent much of the night grinding clock with great field position. You saw Alabama have trouble with the athletes of Auburn. With the whole world thinking about Alabama's "revenge" angle, you just might see yours truly jump in with a "doesn't make sense" blowout call with this short defensive dog.
*Oklahoma was clearly the best team in the Big 12, and earned a fantastic win over Ohio State in Columbus. But, their head coach is inexperienced...and the offense can lose its composure when the opposing team doesn't blink. Do you want a hothead like Baker Mayfield trying to stay cool with all the marbles on the line? I'll tell you what. If Mayfield does stay cool, he's leading the most explosive offense of the group. If he doesn't, the resulting turnovers could bury the Sooners deep in a hole they can't get out of.
*Georgia was #1 in the nation a few weeks ago, and has a chance to finish #1 thanks to their patient put down of Auburn in the rematch. They will probably own the point of attack against Oklahoma, which opens the door to a replay of their wins over Auburn and Notre Dame. They just can't risk falling behind early. Then they'll look like TCU in the Horned Frogs' two meetings with the Sooners where an untrustworthy passing game made a comeback impossible.
My ROOT TRUST went 3-1 in championship games this past weekend, winning with Stanford (+) getting the money vs. USC, Georgia (-) covering by almost three touchdowns vs. Auburn, and Ohio State (-) beat Wisconsin (in a game more one-sided than the final score makes it sound). TCU let me down. But, a 3-0 board sweep in college BASKETBALL Saturday more than erased that disappointment (cashing with Virginia Tech, Kansas, and BYU). While I'm certainly looking forward to the Final Four (which begins on New Year's Day), I'm very excited about all the sports betting opportunities between now and then.
